Maryland out of scholarship QB's after another season-ending injury

Maryland's quarterback situation has gone from unlucky to bizarre, as the Terps announced the third season-ending injury to a signal-caller in a two-week span.

Caleb Rowe, the true freshman who saw his first action after Perry Hills' injury against NC State, suffered a torn ACL against Boston College on Saturday and will miss the rest of the regular season.

"I feel awful for Caleb. I know how excited he was to get his opportunity to be the quarterback of this team,” coach Randy Edsall said in an official statement. "Caleb has a bright future ahead of him, and we will do everything we can to support him through the rehab process."

"I don't know if something like that has ever happened to a team at this position," Maryland coach Randy Edsall said after describing how Rowe, a promising freshman, suffered the left-knee injury on a third-down play but told the coach he was fine and remained in the game. Edsall said the ligament tore away from the bone and that the player probably faces surgery and a five-to-six month recovery period.

Maryland led 17-13 when Rowe went back to pass on third-and-12 near midfield. Unable to find a receiver, he headed for the sideline and was tackled just as he went out of bounds.

Rowe paused before getting up and remained in a kneeling position, staring at his left knee. He then walked to the bench and was examined by the training staff.

"I saw it because he came out of bounds right where I was, and I said to him, 'Are you OK?' And he said, 'Yeah,'" Edsall said.

Edsall noticed there was some blood on Rowe's shin — it's not clear why. "What Caleb said is, 'Oh, it's just my shin,'" the coach said.

Rowe remained in the game and threw an interception on the next series as Boston College won, 20-17.

Last Thursday, the school announced that backup quarterback-turned-wide receiver-turned quarterback Devin Burns would miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Remember, this has all transpired since incumbent starter C.J. Brown suffered a torn ACL during noncontact drills in August.

Now Maryland must move to option No. 5 at quarterback: true freshman linebacker Shawn Petty.

Petty played quarterback at Greenbelt (Md.) Eleanor Roosevelt High School, where the now 240-pound linebacker ran an option attack that his high school coach described as a "60-40 run pass" ratio.

If something were to happen to Petty, option No. 6 is freshman tight end Brian McMahon. For the sake of Terps fans everywhere, let's hope it doesn't come to that.

A real tragedy for Edsall and the 2012 team is how this has affected their bowl chances. Coming off two straight wins before Hills' injury, the Terps were 4-2 with a 2-0 start in ACC play. The offense has not always been dominant, but a much healthier defense has starred under the direction of new coordinator Brian Stewart.

But as strong as the defense has been, it is difficult to find two more wins left on a schedule that includes Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina. Getting the win at Boston College would have made the situation much more manageable, even for a freshman linebacker, but two wins is a tall order for this team. Edsall has done a great job of turning around the level of play and attitude from his 2-10 debut, but it appears injuries will keep the record books from showing that improvement.
