UC Davis has hired former California running game coordinator Ron Gould as its head coach, the school announced on Monday.

Gould will replace Bob Biggs, who retired after the 2012 season. Biggs spent 20 years at Davis and was the second-winningest coach (144-85-1) in program history

"It is a dream come true for me to be the head coach at UC Davis and I am honored to be entrusted with the leadership of the football program at such an outstanding university," Gould said.

The 47-year-old Gould is well-known as a whiz at coaching and recruiting for the running game. He spent 16 seasons at Cal and produced nine 1,000-yard rushers during his last 11 years. He's coached and recruited six of the program's top 10 all-time leading rushers, including NFL backs Marshawn Lynch, J.J. Arrington, Shane Vereen, Justin Forsett and Jahvid Best.

UC Davis has been a cradle of coaches over the years. The list of prominent coaches who either played or coached there includes Paul Hackett, Mike Belotti, Nick Aliotti, Dan Hawkins, Chris Petersen and Gary Patterson.
