Washington State senior quarterback Jeff Tuel has decided not to continue to petition the NCAA for a fifth season of eligibility and instead will start preparing for the NFL draft, according to a report on Tuesday from The Seattle Times.

Tuel was apparently uncomfortable with some of the steps he would have had to take to qualify for that extra year of playing time. According to Tuel, the NCAA wanted him to testify that he was "mistreated" by the previous WSU staff under Paul Wulff.

"That's basically what they were wanting," Tuel said. "I don't feel comfortable saying I was mistreated. I was never mistreated by them. ..."

The attempt to get Tuel an extra season was based on the broken collarbone he suffered in the opening game of the 2011 season. He came back at midseason and was reinjured, prompting the NCAA to wonder if Tuel had been forced back into action before he was ready.

With the appeal up in the air and the prospect of it being dragged out for a while with no guarantee of success, Tuel made the decision to put an end to it and head for the NFL.

"I feel good about my chances," Tuel said. "I'm a confident individual. Whether I'm drafted or a free agent, I'll train hard and play hard."

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Tuel is known for being a good athlete with a good arm. He had his best year as a 2010 sophomore, when he threw for 2,780 yards and 18 touchdowns. At one point, he looked like he might turn into one of the best quarterbacks in the Pac-12, but his injury-plagued career stunted his development.

With Tuel on his way out, it looks like rising junior Connor Halliday is the favorite to take over the reins of Mike Leach's offense in 2013.
