Penn State's Bill O'Brien was named the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year on Wednesday following his first season at the school.

“Coach O'Brien has engineered a tremendous season for the Penn State football program while overcoming obstacles that many considered to be insurmountable,” said Mark Wolpert, Maxwell Football Club executive director, in the official release. “The team's 8-4 record is a great testament to the hard work of Coach O'Brien and his staff, and also to the dedication shown by the student-athletes involved in the football program at Penn State.”

O'Brien had already been named Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the Big Ten media and his fellow coaches earlier this season. He's also a finalist for the Liberty Mutual and Bear Bryant Coach of the Year awards.

And it's not hard to see why, given what O'Brien accomplished during his first season at Penn State.

After Penn State lost its first two games of the 2012 season, there were many questions about how many games the Nittany Lions would manage to win, but O'Brien's team went on to win eight of their final 10 to finish the season at 8-4 with a 6-2 mark in Big Ten play.
