Report: FSU's James Coley headed to Miami as offensive coordinator

Florida State offensive coordinator James Coley is headed to Miami to take the same role for the Hurricanes, according to a report by the Miami Herald that was later confirmed by CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman.

He'll replace Jedd Fisch, who left last week to become offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It appears on the surface to be a lateral move for Coley, but his coordinator title at FSU was mostly ceremonial. Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher ran the offense and called the plays, leaving Coley to handle quarterbacks and help with game planning. At Miami, however, he'll likely have more control of the offense and call plays, just as he did for FIU in 2007 under Mario Cristobal.

Coley will have some talent to work with in Coral Gables, including rising senior quarterback Stephen Morris, who threw for 3,345 yards and 21 touchdowns in his first full year as a starter, and dynamic running back Duke Johnson, who had more than 2,000 all-purpose yards as a true freshman.

Coley is also well regarded as a recruiter; he played a large part in putting together several highly-ranked recruiting classes for the Seminoles. If he can help the Hurricanes nail down that South Florida talent, Miami should be in good shape.
