He'll be replaced by new defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, who was hired last week.
"We wish Marvin Sanders and his family the best of luck," said Kiffin. "Marvin did a great job for us coaching our secondary and in recruiting. But with the hiring of Clancy Pendergast as our defensive coordinator, we decided to go in a different direction based on Clancy's desire to oversee the defensive backs unit."
The 45-year-old Sanders spent just one year with USC. His unit was ninth nationally in interceptions and 41st in pass efficiency defense.
His departure could be problematic for Kiffin as he tries to hold together a stellar recruiting class limited to 15 rides due to NCAA sanctions. One of the top cornerbacks in the country, Jalen Ramsey of Brentwood, Tenn., is committed to the Trojans but is thought to be wavering a bit down the stretch. Pendergast and receivers coach Tee Martin will be visiting him on Thursday.
We'll soon know whether USC's new coaching move has changed his mind.
