Notre Dame picked up a major boost to its recruiting class when five-star defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes of Auburn, Calif., chose the Irish over Alabama to cap off a wild National Signing Day.

Vanderdoes, a 6-foot-2, 310-pounder with cat-like quickness, was originally a USC commitment but he broke ranks with the Trojans on Dec. 27. He was thought to be leaning toward UCLA for a while, but a Jan. 11 visit to South Bend helped hold off a late surge by the Tide, who he visited on Feb. 1.

With Vanderdoes, the Irish grab their third five-star player and move to No. 3 in the 247sports team recruiting rankings. He is rated the No. 1 defensive tackle and No. 6 overall player nationally.
