South Carolina All-America defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is considering buying insurance as he heads into what should be his final season in college, FoxSports.com reported on Wednesday.

Richard "Big Daddy" Salgado, the president of Coastal Advisors LLC, told FoxSports.com that "a member of Clowney's camp" inquired with his company about obtaining a policy worth as much as $5 million in case of a catastrophic injury that prematurely ends his playing career in 2013. Coastal Advisors has insured and guided 35 other top college prospects over the past 15 years in similar fashion, Salgado said.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound Clowney is widely projected to be the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Many think he would've been the first pick in this year's draft, too. Recent talk of Clowney sitting out the 2013 season to prevent possible injury was recently laughed off by Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier:

"Jadeveon likes football. Football players play football ... I think he wants to play. I certainly hope and believe he does. I think he should play for South Carolina this season."

Much of the discussion of Clowney sitting out the year came up after his teammate, tailback Marcus Lattimore, saw his season end due to a major injury. While many speculate that this has cost Lattimore an elite position in the draft, the reality is that Lattimore's history of brittleness combined with a lumbering running style was probably going to be a detriment to his draft status, anyway.

Still, it's a good move for Clowney to seek insurance. But short of a career-ending injury, he's going to be millions of dollars richer at this time next year.
