Michigan RB Fitz Toussaint (leg) says he will run in spring practice

Despite suffering a broken leg on Nov. 17, Michigan running back Fitz Toussaint is determined to participate in spring practice when the Wolverines take the field March 16.

"May not be full contact, [but] I will have a helmet on," Toussaint told The Detroit News this week. "I will be running gassers with those guys."

Toussaint suffered the season-ending injury on the first series of Michigan's 42-17 win against Iowa in Ann Arbor. He was tackled after a 10-yard rush near the sideline, and his left tibia broke. It was a bitter end to a year that tested the Wolverines' running back both on and off the field. Earlier in 2012, Toussaint's mother was badly injured in a car accident. In July, he was arrested for DUI and suspended for the season opener against Alabama. In 10 games, Toussaint ran for 514 yards and five touchdowns on 130 carries.

He said his perspective has changed since suffering the broken leg. Toussaint said the injury has "helped me think about everything in a whole different way."

"It was not just the season, but it was the year," Toussaint said. "It was kind of like a reality check for me. I was able to see things different. I really think this [injury] sat me down to the point where I wasn't mobile and allowed me to think about a lot of stuff."

More attention has been paid to Toussaint's status in recent weeks after Michigan signed five-star running back Derrick Green in the Class of 2013. Running backs coach Fred Jackson said earlier that he believes Toussaint will be ready for the start of the season. When it comes to the competition in fall camp, Toussaint said he is "turned up to the max."
