Former Texas A&M quarterback Jameill Showers, who left College Station in late January after backing up Heisman winner Johnny Manziel this past fall, has decided to play for UTEP, according to a report from MinersIllustrated.com.

The decision is a big coup for Miners coach Sean Kugler, who lands a talented signal caller with some game experience.

"I sent over my letter of intent and chose UTEP," Showers said in a phone interview. "My dad and I took a trip down [to UTEP] this past weekend and we had fun, met the coaching staff and I got to talk to Coach Kugler. They are doing some big things."

Showers, a 2012 redshirt sophomore, will graduate from Texas A&M in June and then enroll for graduate classes at UTEP for his final two seasons of eligibility.

He was supposed to be the starter in 2012, but he lost his job to Manziel, who went on to become the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. Showers threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns while appearing in seven games as Manziel's backup. The strong-armed rising junior should fit in nicely in the Miners' offensive scheme, which is similar to what he saw at Texas A&M.

The Miners struggled to a 3-9 record last season and quarterback Nick Lamaison is graduating, so the job should be Showers' to lose.
