Former USC quarterback Jesse Scroggins will be "very limited" during Arizona's spring practice, Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez announced Tuesday.

"Scroggins had foot surgery, which is something he probably needed to get fixed earlier in his career," Rodriguez told the Arizona Daily Star. "We had a choice. We probably could have played with it, but I'd rather have everyone be 100 percent in August than have a question mark if he tweaks it or something.

"He'll be very limited this spring. He won't be in any full-contact practices."

After two seasons at USC, Scroggins transferred to El Camino College (Calif.) before signing with Arizona. He is widely considered the frontrunner to replace Matt Scott as the starting quarterback in Rodriguez's offense. Scott led the Pac-12 in total offense (343.8 yards per game) in 2012, totaling more than 3,600 passing yards and 500 rushing yards.

Scroggins was a four-star prospect coming out of Lakewood High when he signed with the Trojans in 2010. His primary competition for the starting quarterback position is expected to be B.J. Denker, Scott's backup in 2012, along with Nick Isham, a walk-on who started seven games at Louisiana Tech in 2011.

Arizona will hold the first of 15 spring practice sessions Saturday morning. Spring practice will conclude with the spring game on April 13.
