DeLoss Dodds: 'Saban isn't going to come [to Texas]'

By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer
Texas fans should give up on the Nick Saban pipe dream (USATSI)

Since the start of the 2010 season Texas has gone 22-16 without finishing higher than third place in the Big 12. Not surprisingly the calls for Mack Brown to be replaced in Austin have only grown louder over that span of time.

One of the names that pops up quite often among Texas fans about a replacement for Brown is Alabama's Nick Saban, as rumors, whether credible or not, have surfaced about Saban coming to Texas for the last few years.

Well, those Texas fans can give up on that pipe dream because not even Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds sees that happening and he even addressed it in a recent interview with The Daily Texan.

“I love stability. I love continuity,” Dodds said. “If you have stability, you have continuity and you've got good people. It's a formula that works. I think we've got that. If somebody tells me we need to change, I say, ‘OK, but who should we hire? [Alabama head coach Nick] Saban? Well, Saban isn't going to come here.'”

And this is something any athletic director, not just Dodds, can say to their school's fan base. Nick Saban has no reason to leave Alabama as it's become increasingly clear in the last few years he has the best job in the country. Why would Saban ever leave college football's premiere program, one he built, to take another college job?

Sure, it's possible Saban gets bored at Alabama one day and wants a new challenge, but if that ever comes to pass it's likely the challenge will be in the one area Saban hasn't been able to conquer: the NFL.
