The primary goal of spring practice is not just to start getting your team ready for the upcoming season, but to get through the practices with everybody healthy. Unfortunately for BYU, the Cougars couldn't get through one practice without losing a projected starter.

Cornerback Trent Trammell suffered a knee injury during BYU's first practice on Monday and on Wednesday coach Bronco Mendenhall confirmed Trammell had torn his ACL and is likely out for the 2013 season.

“We don't believe he has a chance to play this year, so (he'll take) a redshirt and play the following year,” Mendenhall told reporters. “He's a fantastic kid and it was hard for all of us to watch that injury. ... He just planted in the turf, knee shifted around him and it's just really hard to see.”

Trammell is a junior college transfer entering his first camp with BYU, but he had been working with the first-team defense and was expected to be a starter this fall.

He's scheduled to undergo surgery on his knee March 14.
