Syracuse coach Scott Shafer has dismissed defensive end Markus Pierce-Brewster and defensive tackle Davon Wells for a violation of team rules.

The announcement just days after both players appeared in court for their preliminary hearing the case of an on-campus robbery last month. Both Pierce-Brewster and Wells faced felony burglary charges after allegedly stealing flat-screen televisions, Xbox gaming systems, and other electronics from an apartment while students were sleeping.

Earlier this week, Shafer indicated that he was going to wait on the judicial process ran its course before making a decision.

"Give me a little time to figure out what the people in the judicial courts are saying and all that type of thing," Shafer said Tuesday via The Post-Standard. "At the end of the day I'll make the best decision for the team, for the guys that are worthy of it. I'll make the best decision for the team and the individual comes second. I just need little bit of time as all those processes are being worked as we speak."

Pierce-Brewster's case was waived to a grand jury while Walls is now scheduled to appear in court Sept. 12. Whether or not it was intended, the first-year coach sent a message with the decision.

Of the two players, Pierce-Brewster is arguably a bigger loss for the Orange in 2013. The junior defensive end recorded 30 tackles (eight for a loss) along with a sack and a fumble recovery. It was just his first season with the Orange after transferring from City College of San Francisco, and he was expected to be a key player for defense this fall.

Even though the more valuable player had his case dismissed, Shafer has decided to remove both players from the team. Now the new staff has two more areas of concern heading into spring drills.

The Orange begin spring practice March 19.
