Gunner Kiel's time at Notre Dame is over. According to Irish coach Brian Kelly, he has been granted his release and is "no longer part of the program."

Kelly addressed Kiel's status as part of his pre-spring press conference, explaining that the highly touted quarterback from the Class of 2012 had an opportunity to compete for playing time. After discussions last week, paperwork was filed and Kiel has already begun the process of choosing another school.

"I don't know that I'm surprised -- we had kind of created an opportunity for him to compete in the spring," Kelly told reporters. "So maybe a little surprised from that standpoint, because he was actually told he'd be given the opportunity to compete. Sometimes when you don't hear that, you wouldn't be surprised."

CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman reported that a coach at a major program was contacted by Kiel's representatives last month about the possibility of a transfer. Kiel originally committed to Indiana before flipping his commitment to LSU. The Indiana native graduated high school early but then switched his commitment from LSU to Notre Dame at the last minute.

Kiel ran Notre Dame's scout team while redshirting the 2012 season. He was expected to push Everett Golson for starters reps if he decided to stay with the Irish.
