Michigan suffered a huge loss to its defense during spring practice as the school announced that linebacker Jake Ryan suffered a torn ACL on a workout on Tuesday and is out indefinitely.

"You always hate when anyone gets injured and, unfortunately, we've dealt with our share of injuries in the last 12 months," said Michigan coach Brady Hoke in a release."We will support Jake to make sure he has everything he needs to get through this. I know he will attack his rehabilitation just like he does everything else and will be back when he's ready."

There is no official diagnosis of how much time that Ryan, heading into his junior season, will miss due to the injury. Torn ACLs typically take a year to heal. Still, you have to think the odds of Ryan seeing the field in 2013 are not good.

Which is not only terrible for Ryan but bad news for the Michigan defense in general. Ryan led the Wolverines with 88 tackles last season with 16 tackles for loss, 4 1/2 sacks and four forced fumbles.
