According to the school, Dye suffered the injury to his right Achilles tendon during the team's scrimmage on March 23. Hurricanes coach Al Golden only called the injury "significant" after the scrimmage, withholding details of the injury until Tuesday.
Dye is likely sidelined for the rest of spring and summer, but Golden would not rule him out for the 2013 season. The fifth-year senior played six games on the defensive line before moving to tight end for 2011 and 2012. Dye recorded just four catches last season for 48 yards but started in eight games and appeared in all 12 as the second tight end in jumbo packages.
Dye was listed as the second-string defensive end on Miami's prespring depth chart. The Hurricanes return three starters on the defensive line, with senior defensive tackle Curtis Porter (three starts in 2012) rounding out the experienced group. Miami's defense struggled against the run last season, giving up 4.97 yards per carry -- ranking No. 104 nationally.
