The NCAA Division I Board of Directors decided Thursday to suspend a new recruiting rule that would have allowed football coaches to send text messages to and have unlimited contact with prospective student-athletes.

The board passed the rule in January but reconsidered it after receiving over 75 requests to have it overridden.

It also suspended or tabled three other recruiting-related rules from earlier this year:

  • Eliminating rules defining recruiting roles
  • Permitting earlier contact with recruits
  • Eliminating restrictions on printed recruiting materials

It was made clear by the board that these issues will remain in consideration moving forward:

"We are supportive of moving as aggressively as possible while still studying the issues with due diligence," said board chair and Wake Forest president Nathan Hatch. "It's important to make sure all the pieces of the recruiting model work together to make the most effective change in the culture."

The proposals were originally adopted in order to streamline the NCAA's vast regulatory handbook and allow compliance officials (both at the NCAA and at its members schools) to spend less time and effort on micromanaging details and put more focus on larger enforcement issues. But the changes faced heavy public opposition from the day they were announced, with the Big Ten and Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity among the more outspoken opponents.
