Robb Akey's acrimonious departure as head coach of the Idaho Vandals has only grown more acrimonious with the news he has filed a lawsuit against his former employer.

"All I'm looking for is getting the money I earned," Akey told TV station KREM of Spokane, Wash., confirming that he had filed suit. "I'm not looking for anything more than that. I just want a fair resolution."

The suit was filed April 16 in Latah County court with Akey naming the University of Idaho, the university's Board of Regents, and the state Board of Education as defendants.

Idaho athletic director Rob Spear declined comment to the Associated Press.

Though it's not yet clear (per the AP) what damages Akey is seeking in the suit, the filing is very likely motivated by the circumstances surrounding his dismissal by Spear last October. Akey was fired after six seasons in Moscow, a 20-50 overall record, and a 1-7 start to the 2012 campaign punctuated by a 70-28 loss to Louisiana Tech immediately before his dismissal.

Though he acknowledged that his win-loss record "wasn't good enough," Akey told the Twin Falls Times-News that same month that the timing of Spear's decision had been motivated by athletic department finances. Akey was reportedly due $105,000 upon the completion of the 2012 season.

“If I had coached four more games,” Akey said, “they would have had to pay me a third of my salary. You lose a third of your salary, it affects your ability to feed your family, so it's a little disappointing.”

Though the full extent of the suit is still to be revealed, it seems like Akey was, in fact, disappointed enough to seek legal action.
