Syracuse to retire Donovan McNabb's number

The greatest player in recent Syracuse football history will have his number retired this fall.

Syracuse will play Wake Forest Nov. 2 at home in the Carrier Dome in the teams' first meeting as ACC members.

If there was any question surrounding McNabb's jersey retirement, it wasn't if but when. McNabb started every game of his four-year Syracuse career, being named first-team All-Big East all four seasons and the league's Offensive Player of the Year three times. He was named the Big East's Offensive Player of the Decade for the 1990s and, as a senior, finished fifth in the 1998 Heisman voting after throwing for 2,326 yards, rushing for 510 more and accounting for 30 touchdowns while throwing just six interceptions.

Add that to his long and successful NFL career, and it's no surprise that McNabb is considered possibly the greatest quarterback in Syracuse's rich history -- or that first-year Orange head coach Scott Shafer was happy to tweet this photo with the future jersey-retiree:
