Virginia running back Clifton Richardson is leaving the program, Cavaliers coach Mike London announced on Thursday.

"Clifton Richardson has been granted permission to seek a release from his scholarship to pursue opportunities elsewhere," said London. "Clifton will be leaving the University in good academic standing. I wish the best for Clifton as he pursues his academic and athletic goals."

Richardson, a junior, will have two years of athletic eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot, 210-pounder from Newport News, Va., was limited to just seven games and 96 rushing yards in 2012 due to a leg injury. He appeared in 20 games overall in his Cavaliers career, rushing for 425 yards and two touchdowns on 96 carries.

The Cavs should be fine at running back this fall even with Richardson's departure. Leading rusher Kevin Parks returns and big things are expected of highly-touted incoming freshman Taquan Mizzell.
