Report: Detroit Lions expected to create bowl game

By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer

Alabama and Virginia Tech will play for the
Detroit in December. What could be better? (USATSI)

If you're a big fan of the Little Caesars Bowl you may want to plan on making the trip to Detroit for it this December, for it is looking like it will be your last chance to see the game.

According to ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy, the Detroit Lions are expected to start their own bowl game that will be played at Ford Field in 2014. The game, which would likely be a matchup of the Big Ten and ACC, would eliminate the Little Caesars Bowl played at Ford Field. The bowl game originated after the 1997 season as the Motor City Bowl and had four different sponsors before becoming the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in 2009.

Though the game itself never featured college football players in a televised pizza-eating competition, given the diets of college students, it might have been one of the most thrilling sporting events of all time.

Of course, while this new bowl will have a different name and different people running it, not much will change as far as what it is. It will still be a bowl game in Detroit in December. The only change will be that instead of a MAC team playing a team from a larger conference, it will be just be another game between the Big Ten and ACC.

So the real loser of this deal would be the MAC, as it will need to find a new bowl tie-in.

Though the fact we never got that televised pizza-eating contest means nobody ever really won in the first place.
