There's been a lot of talk lately about the SEC going to a nine-game conference schedule, but there's a reason why SEC coaches not named Nick Saban are so opposed to the idea. And that's because playing in the SEC is hard.

So it could be a good thing for Texas A&M that the Aggies won't be playing a scheduled home-and-home series against Southern California. The games were scheduled in 2009, but wouldn't have taken place until 2015 and 2016. However, A&M athletic director Eric Hyman explained to the Houston Chronicle that with the uncertainty of the SEC schedule in the future, those games just had to be canceled.

"Having switched from the Big 12 to the SEC, we've had to scrub our whole schedule -- throw it almost out," Hyman said. "Going forward, we've had conversations with people, but we really can't be contractually (obligated) until the conference says you've got the green light."

Hyman also initially gave the impression that Texas A&M's home-and-home with Oregon in 2018 and 2019 had been canceled as well, but has since corrected himself, as those games are still a part of A&M's future schedule.

Hyman also said the plan for A&M's nonconference schedule in the future would be to include an FCS opponent, a "lower-level BCS game" and then "a game from a national standpoint." The USC games certainly would have qualified as "national standpoint" games.

As for when the Aggies plan on scheduling such games again, Hyman says Texas A&M has had some "general conversations with some people" and that in time those conversations will lead to "something more concrete."
