Georgia's young defensive backfield suffered a potentially major setback with freshman Reggie Wilkerson reportedly suffering a knee injury in offseason workouts.

Wilkerson, a four-star member of the Bulldogs' 2013 class, enrolled in January and received high praise from coaches during spring practice. According to the Macon Telegraph, the freshman cornerback suffered a "potentially season-ending knee injury."

The freshman cornerback shared the news himself on Twitter, comparing his injury and rehab efforts to Washington Redskins' quarterback Robert Griffin III. Junior wide receiver Michael Bennett also chimed in on the news, posting well wishes for a speedy recovery.

Wilkerson finished spring practice sharing reps at first-team cornerback, opposite of Damian Swann . The Bulldogs need young players to step up all over the defensive depth chart, and Wilkerson was a candidate to earn a starting job for the season opener against Clemson with Josh Harvey-Clemons' one-game suspension.

Even if Wilkerson was not guaranteed a starting position, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham told reporters this spring that the freshman could have an instant impact for the Bulldogs.

"He's a very conscientious guy, wants to do things exactly right," Grantham said. "He's very hard on himself, and I think he's flashed, he's just gotta continue to work. I see him as a guy that can be in our rotation."

At this time there has been no word from Georgia to confirm the severity of the injury or expected recovery time.
