Report: Johnny Manziel considered transfer before 2012 season

Johnny Manziel's tweets about leaving College Station have been overanalyzed all week, but according to the Dallas Morning News it was not the first time Manziel considered leaving Texas A&M.

After redshirting in 2011, Manziel was arrested for an incident in College Station's Northgate bar district last summer. Coach Kevin Sumlin later said the soon-to-be Heisman-winning quarterback was disciplined internally.

The Dallas Morning News, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reported that Manziel was initially suspended for the entire 2012 season. If the ruling had been upheld on appeal, the source told the paper, Manziel "would have felt it was necessary to transfer."

Manziel called the offseason incident "one of the biggest mistakes of my life" when he finally met with the media for the first time in November (Sumlin prohibits freshmen from media availability during the regular season).

If the report is true, Texas A&M is fortunate the appeal process did not lead to Manziel's departure. At the time, Manziel was expected to be the backup quarterback to Jameill Showers. No one knew he would become "Johnny Football," leading the Aggies to an 11-2 finish and a Cotton Bowl win during the first season of SEC play.

As for the tweets, CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler reports Manziel has told at least one of the Texas A&M coaches he should not have sent the message over the weekend. A coach reached out to Manziel after the news spread, and Manziel understands the strength of his words.

The San Antonio Express-News reported that Manziel's Twitter-expressed frustration was, in fact, over a parking ticket:

Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, had been fishing in Port Aransas on Saturday and was still on the coast when he talked over the phone to an officer, who wrote him a ticket for being parked the wrong way in front of his house and for his windows being tinted too dark (his vehicle was in College Station while he was with friends in Port Aransas), according to the insider.

Manziel's tweets have been overinterpreted since their appearance, and A&M fans will no doubt breathe just a little easier knowing they were the result of a momentary burst of anger rather than any long-term frustration. But the furor over them -- as silly as it looks in retrospect -- should still be a lesson to Manziel that even those momentary bursts will have to be kept to himself, and far, far away from social media.
