Bronco Mendenhall will be at Brigham Young for at least four more seasons, as the school announced a contract extension that will last through the 2016 season on Wednesday.

“I am thrilled to have Bronco signed as our head football coach through the 2016 season,” said BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe in a release. “Over the past eight seasons, his leadership has guided our football program back to national prominence through top-25 rankings, bowl victories, All-American athletes and overall excitement at LaVell Edwards Stadium. I look forward to what the next four years will bring with the new era of BYU football.”

“BYU is a special place and this is a special time,” Mendenhall said in the same release. “I'm excited to build on the success of our program over past eight years, and I think there's much more that we can accomplish at BYU.”

Mendenhall's previous deal was scheduled to expire after the 2013 season, but although this extension may seem a bit late, it shouldn't come as a surprise, either.

Mendenhall took over the BYU program from Gary Crowton in 2005 after spending the previous two seasons as defensive coordinator. In the three years before Mendenhall took over the program, the Cougars went 14-21 without a bowl appearance. In Mendenhall's eight seasons, the Cougars have gone 74-29 with eight straight bowl appearances -- going 6-2 in those bowl games -- while making the transition from the Mountain West to being an independent.
