Minnesota linebacker Lamonte Edwards dismissed from team

By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer

Minnesota junior linebacker Lamonte Edwards has been dismissed from the team following a recent arrest, a school spokesman confirmed to Minneapolis' Star Tribune on Wednesday.

Edwards was arrested after he allegedly stole an iPhone from another Minnesota athlete from inside a weight room on June 18.

According to the police report, the police used tracking software to find the phone and were led to Edwards, who initially told the police the phone belonged to his cousin. Edwards later admitted to the police that he took the phone.

Edwards had been expected to compete for a starting job at outside linebacker with the Gophers this season.

Edwards had seen playing time in 23 games the last two seasons, making 25 tackles. Edwards was originally recruited as a running back before making the switch to linebacker in his sophomore year and had eight rushing attempts for 11 yards and a touchdown as a freshman in 2011.
