“We've talked to the Jones family and realize this was a very difficult decision,” said coach Mack Brown in a statement. “Cayleb is looking for a fresh start, and we understand that and are appreciative of everything he did for Texas. We will support him as he moves forward and wish him the best of luck in the future.”
Jones' father, Robert Jones, issued a statement of his own.
“We've really enjoyed being a part of the Texas program,” said Robert Jones, a former Dallas Cowboy linebacker. “But we've talked about the situation as a family and we think it's best for Cayleb to get a fresh start and transfer to another school.”
Although Texas has granted Jones' unconditional release, it's unknown which school "another school" will be.
What we do know is that Jones -- along with Kendall Sanders -- had been suspended for Texas' season opener against New Mexico State. Jones was charged with felony assault in in March for allegedly breaking the jaw of a Texas tennis player who was dating his former girlfriend.
Jones appeared in 12 games as a freshman last season, catching two passes for 35 yards. He also rushed for 10 yards on one carry.
