UConn junior Scott McCummings was expected to take on a more diverse role in the offense in 2013, playing at wide receiver and continuing his role as a Wildcat quarterback. Unfortunately, that transition was set back when McCummings tore his Achilles tendon over the weekend.

According to the school, McCummings is expected to have surgery this week and will miss the entire 2013 season.

UConn coach Paul Pasqualoni used McCummings, a dual-threat prospect recruited by Randy Edsall, in specialized Wildcat packages over the last two seasons. He attempted just two passes in 2012, but was the team's second-leading rusher behind starting running back Lyle McCombs.

The staff announced McCummings' move to wide receiver on Friday, opening up the competition for Chandler Whitmer's backup. UConn has recruited three pro-style quarterbacks -- Tim Bole, Richard Lagow and Kivon Taylor -- to join redshirt freshman Casey Cochran behind Whitmer.

UConn has not yet reached the postseason under Paul Pasqualoni, falling just short with a 5-7 record in each of his two seasons Storrs. The Huskies kick off the 2013 season against Towson on Aug. 29.
