Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning is out, at least for the time being, after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

Cardinals coach Pete Lembo described the procedure as minor -- a quick fix for a knee issue that was "annoying" Wenning -- and told reporters the senior starter would be available for the season opener against Illinois State.

"We fully expect he will be back on the practice field in a relatively short time and ready to go for the season opener Aug. 29," Lembo said. "In the meatime, we will be able to get a very thorough evaluation of our backup quarterbacks who are competing well so far this preseason."

Wenning was a 2nd team All-MAC selection in 2012 after passing for 3,095 yards and 24 touchdowns on the way to a 9-4 finish for the Cardinals. The three-year starter ranks second on the school's career list for both passing yards (7,254) and passing touchdowns (57). Wenning already holds the school records for completions (716) and attempts (1,144).
