Florida State held their local media day on Sunday, an opportunity for the players to reflect on the first week of fall camp. Redshirt freshman Jameis Winston, currently in a battle for the starting quarterback job with sophomore Jacob Coker, was asked a question about "Manziel disease."
"If I ever get Manziel disease, I want all of you to smack me in the head with your microphones," Winston responded.
It seems that this quote has been taken out of context, so let's get some background from Rivals' D.C. Reeves.
For context, the reporter used the term 'Manziel disease' in his question to Winston, he just repeated it. #FSU— D.C. Reeves (@Warchant_DC) August 11, 2013
The reporter was likely referencing the distractions that come with being a young star quarterback. Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher says the quarterback competition is still open, but many believe Winston -- the two-sport star who also contributed to Florida State's Top 10 baseball team -- will ultimately be under center to start the season.
Winston is very outspoken -- Orlando Sentinel's Coley Harvey called him the "designated team goofball" -- but I do not think he was planning on taking a dig at Manziel. The reporter asked a question about "Manziel disease," and Winston tried to put a funny spin on the question with the crowd.
