Notre Dame S Nicky Baratti (shoulder) out for 2013

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

Notre Dame lost a potential starter from their secondary when sophomore safety Nicky Baratti suffered a season-ending injury over the weekend.

Baratti dislocated his shoulder during practice on Saturday. According to Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly, it is the same shoulder that the sophomore safety had surgically repaired during the offseason. The injury will require yet another surgery, which is expected to keep him sidelined for all of 2013.

"We hope to regain that year [of eligibility] obviously," Kelly said Monday. "Very disappointed for Nick, he's worked hard to get back. We'll expect the next man in to step up and get it done there."

Baratti appeared in all 13 games as a freshman in 2012, mostly contributing to special teams and backing up senior safety Zeke Motta. According to the Chicago Tribune, Baratti had been getting some first-team reps in preparation for 2013.

Elijah Shumate figures to take a stronger hold on the starting job opposite Matthias Farley with Baratti on the sideline, but Kelly was sure to mention a host of secondary players -- John Turner, Eilar Hardy, Austin Collinsworth and Max Redfield -- who could contribute in 2013.
