Spurrier: Clowney 'back in good graces,' will play vs. UNC

You may want to sit down for this: Jadeveon Clowney won't, in fact, sit out South Carolina's season opener against North Carolina.

Citing Clowney's nagging shoulder injury and seemingly unhappy with several players "act[ing] like they're really hurt," Steve Spurrier said after Monday's practice might not play against the Tar Heels. That was always likely to be more motivational ploy than actual threat, though, and Spurrier confirmed Wednesday that Clowney will see the field Aug. 29.

Clowney is "back in good graces. He's back in the fold," Spurrier told The State. "He's going to play against North Carolina."

Spurrier explained after Tuesday's practice that there had been a "communication problem" between himself, Clowney, and other injured Gamecocks Damiere Byrd and Bruce Ellington -- players who Spurrier expected to watch practice rather than be "in the locker room jivin' around and playing on their cell phones," as he put it.

But Spurrier admitted that no one told them they were supposed to be watching practice, and all three returned Tuesday, with Clowney and Byrd participating.

"I'm the dummy on that," Spurrier said. "We had a communication problem and we're ready to go.”

So that's one tempest-in-a-teapot that's quieted down. Of course, this is Steve Spurrier, so ...
