TCU leading returning receiver Brandon Carter suffered a hand injury earlier during a scrimmage on Tuesday. While surgery is required, Gary Patterson announced that Carter will be ready for the season opener against LSU.

"He'll be all right. It's not a big deal," Patterson said Thursday. "He'll play in the ballgame. He'll be practicing next week. When he can tolerate the pain and catch the ball ... once he can do that, then he goes."

Carter was the second option to Josh Boyce in 2012, recording 36 receptions for 590 yards and six touchdowns. With Boyce gone, the Euless, Texas native is expected to step up as the primary target for either Casey Pachall or Trevone Boykin. Patterson plans to announce the starting quarterback after Saturday's scrimmage, and many believe Pachall, who left the team in the middle of the 2012 season, will reclaim his old job.

TCU cannot afford to be without another starter for the season opener against LSU at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. All-Big 12 defensive end Devonte Fields will miss the first two games of the season due to a undisclosed violation of team policy.

Patterson recently complimented Fields' work ethic, citing the suspension as a reason for his strong showing early in fall camp.

"I didn't think Devonte had a good early camp because of the suspension," Patterson told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "This last week and a half he's really started to come on. We went back and showed him what he looked like as a freshman and how he worked and how he played, and his whole demeanor changed."

The Horned Frogs follow LSU with a home game against Southeast Louisiana then kickoff Big 12 play against Texas Tech on Sept. 12.
