Arkansas WR Wilson out for year; LB Peters, TE Tate out 6 weeks or more

By Chip Patterson | College Writer

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema announced that three different players each sustained significant injuries this week, including projected starting wide receiver Demetrius Wilson.

Wilson, a senior, suffered a season-ending knee ligament tear, while sophomore linebacker Otha Peters will miss 6-8 weeks with a broken arm. Senior tight end Austin Tate is expected to miss six weeks with a shoulder injury.

"I think that we've established a lot better depth than I could have ever imagined at the beginning of fall camp, just because some of our injury situations," Bielema told reporters after the team's Saturday night scrimmage.

The plan, according to Bielema, is for Wilson to redshirt 2012 and return next season for his final year of eligibility. He appeared in all 12 games for the Razorbacks last year, catching nine passes 117 yards and a touchdown in addition to contributing on special teams. Wilson transferred to Arkansas from Glendale Community College, where he was a two-time first-team All-ACCAC selection.

It is possible that Peters could return to the field by the time the Razorbacks kick off SEC play against Texas A&M on Sept. 28, but Bielema said he and the staff will keep an eye on the sophomore linebacker in case recovery from the broken arm lasts longer than expected.

"I know he's got a redshirt, but we'll kind of talk through that as it goes," Bielema said of Tate. "The doctor that did the surgery yesterday [said] everything was on a positive going forward."

The Razorbacks kick off the Bret Bielema era on Saturday, Aug. 31 at home against Louisiana-Lafayette.
