The injuries are mounting up for Virginia Tech, and now you can add "personal matters" as a reason why the Hokies' depth has become an issue for the beginning of the 2013 season.

Defensive lineman Corey Marshall has left the team "to take care of some personal matters," according to a Virginia Tech spokesman. There were no specifics given regarding Marshall's reason for leaving, but "his status with the team will be determined at a later date."

Marshall joined Virginia Tech in 2011 as a highly-touted defensive end from North Dinwiddie, Va.. He has played both end and tackle during his two seasons with the Hokies, appearing in all 27 games and recording 39 total tackles.

Marshall was expected to be a regular contributor at defensive tackle, providing depth and experience behind Derrick Hopkins and Luther Maddy. If Marshall is not back for the season opener against Alabama -- or if he does not return to the team in 2013 at all -- the door will be open for sophomore Kris Harley, redshirt freshman Alston Smith and Nigel Williams to compete for playing time.

Late last week, the school announced season-ending injuries for linebacker Ronny Vandyke and running back Tony Gregory. But that's not all -- offensive lineman Mark Shuman is expected to miss four-to-six weeks with a knee injury and running back JC Coleman sprained both ankles in practice. Add those injuries to a report that includes All-ACC cornerback Antone Exum (offseason knee surgery), and it looks like a lot of new faces will be on the field against Alabama on Aug. 31.
