Texas A&M chancellor on Manziel: 'I know he's innocent'

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

Johnny Manziel is not speaking to the media while Texas A&M and the NCAA investigate whether the Heisman Trophy winner took money for autographs, but Texas A&M's chancellor has stepped forward to claim Johnny Football's innocence.

System chancellor John Sharp spoke to KBTX in College Station after an event at Kyle Field on Thursday, explaining that he "has seen things other folks can't see" and believes that the allegations "did not happen."

"I know he's innocent," Sharp told KBTX. "I know that he didn't do what they accused him of doing."

In total, ESPN's Outside the Lines is reporting that Manziel took part in six signings for three brokers in less than a month. The NCAA is investigating whether any violations took place, as the brokers have requested anonymity with ESPN or refused to speak to the NCAA on the issue.

The first report regarding Johnny Manziel's alleged autograph deals ran Aug. 4, just before the Aggies media day in College Station. Manziel has not spoken to the media since then, following the NCAA's guidelines of not commenting on ongoing investigations.
