Jake Rudock named Iowa's starting quarterback

With just over a week to go before Iowa opens its 2013 season with Jordan Lynch and the Northern Illinois Huskies, the Hawkeyes have finally settled on a starting quarterback.

Sophomore Jake Rudock has emerged from the three-way battle with Cody Sokol and C.J. Beathard for the job. While Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has said all spring and summer that the battle was close, it was Sokol's experience from spending the 2012 season as a back up to James Vandenberg that ultimately helped him get the nod.

Though that experience as a backup is all Rudock has as he's never thrown a pass in an actual game for the Hawkeyes.

Of course, whether Rudock lacks experience or not, he won't have to do all that much to be an improvement over Vandenberg last season. The Hawkeyes finished eleventh in the Big Ten (and No. 115 nationally) in passing efficiency with a 107.72 rating and in yards per attempt with 5.8 (No. 116 nationally). They also tied with Kansas for No. 121 nationally with just seven touchdown passes last season. Only New Mexico and Army threw for less scores.

So things can only go up from here.
