Florida State names Jameis Winston starting quarterback

The announcement was inevitable, but on Friday Florida State finally made things official. Redshirt freshman Jameis Winston was named the Seminoles starting quarterback.

While Winston was in a quarterback battle with Jacob Coker during the spring and summer, it always felt like Winston would win the starting job. Especially after Clint Trickett announced he was transferring to Wake Forest in May.

Winston was a five-star member of Florida State's 2012 recruiting class, and while he redshirted last season, he was very impressive during Florida State's spring game. He threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns while showing off a very strong arm.

Though the football field isn't the only place Winston has shown off the cannon attached to his shoulder, as he spent last year as both a relief pitcher and outfielder for the Seminoles.

Florida State opens its season on Labor Day against Pittsburgh at Heinz Field.
