West Virginia seemingly cleared up a crowded running back position when Dana Holgorsen announced that Andrew Buie would redshirt the 2013 season.

"He had to make some decisions," Holgorsen said at his Tuesday press conference. "Did we force him to redshirt? No. He just felt like it was in the best interest for him and in the best interest for the program to save his year."

Holgorsen indicated that Buie needed to "develop both mentally and physically" during the fall and the junior running back would return to the team in the spring with two years of eligibility remaining.

But Buie's future seems murky after West Virginia confirmed to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the running back is not enrolled in school for the fall semester. Holgorsen clarified the situation at his first call-in show of the season on Thursday night.

According to the Charleston Gazette, Holgorsen said Buie is withdrawing from school only for the fall semester. When -- or if -- he re-enrolls and rejoins the team in January, he will still have the two years of eligibility remaining. If Buie's future plans do not include West Virginia, he must enroll somewhere else quickly to sit out the necessary time to comply with NCAA transfer rules.

Buie led the Mountaineers with 851 yards rushing and seven touchdowns as a sophomore in 2012, adding 318 receiving to his total in the Geno Smith-led attack.
