The first-half suspension for Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was well publicized, but not many believed that a 30-minute absence would set back the Aggies in their season opener against Rice.
But just before kickoff, the school announced suspensions for linebacker Steven Jenkins, defensive end Gavin Stansbury, cornerback De'Vante Harris and wide receiver Ed Pope. All players have been suspended for the first two games for a violation of team rules.
Jenkins, Stansbury and Harris are all starters, joining Manziel, cornerback Deshazor Everett and safety Floyd Raven as starters kicking off 2013 on the sidelines serving a suspension. Everett will return for the second half, along with Manziel, but Raven is suspended for the entire game.
Matt Joeckel started the game in place of Manziel, but the backups on defense allowed Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue to break off a 57-yard run en route an Owls touchdown on their first drive of the game.
