Penn State will host West Virginia at Beaver Stadium on Sept. 2, 2023, and West Virginia will return the favor on Aug. 31, 2024. The 2023 meeting will be the first time the old rivals have played a football game since 1992.
CBSSports.com's Jeremy Fowler first reported the two schools were finalizing a deal in July.
"We are excited to announce this football series with West Virginia," Penn State athletic director Dave Joyner said. "The renewal of our West Virginia rivalry is a series our alumni and fans have wanted to see on our future schedules. I am appreciative of the efforts of [West Virginia AD] Oliver Luck in getting our two schools together again. As we prepare to move to a nine-game Big Ten schedule , I am very pleased that we have been to able to schedule old rivals like West Virginia and Pitt and add Virginia Tech in upcoming years."
Penn State and West Virginia have met 59 times in history, with Penn State holding a 48-9-2 edge in the series. The first meeting took place in 1904 and then the schools met every season from 1947 through 1992.
Then Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993 and that marked the end of the rivalry.
Thirty years and a few conferences later and it will begin anew.
