Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller is 90 percent healthy after missing two games with a knee injury, Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said Monday. He has been cleared to practice this week and the team expects him to start in the Big Ten opener against Wisconsin on Saturday night.
"I know Braxton, if he has a good week of practice, will start," Meyer told reporters Monday. "I saw him [Sunday], and I'm much more confident. I mean, he had a very good day yesterday, and we practiced pretty hard.
"I'm saying he's around 90 [percent] right now, and he could be 100 by next week, I'm hoping."
Miller did not play at all against Cal or Florida A&M after suffering a knee injury in the first quarter against San Diego State on Sept. 7. Backup quarterback Kenny Guiton has thrived in Miller's absence, throwing 12 touchdowns -- including setting a single-game school record with six passing touchdowns in just one half of work -- over the past three weeks. Guiton was named the Walter Camp Player of the Week after the win against Cal and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week after his record-setting performance against Florida A&M.
Still, Meyer indicated Monday that the 2012 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year will start when he is healthy.
"I am very comfortable with both quarterbacks, and Braxton, I imagine there might be a little bit of rust, which I was hoping to get out of him last week, so I'm going to practice him real hard this week," Meyer said. "But Braxton is 13-0 as a starter [since the start of last season] and has done very well with his improvements.
"Someone has to come off the field."
Wisconsin enters the game nationally ranked with a 3-1 record, only falling to Arizona State in a game that could have ended much differently if it weren't for some different clock management by the Badgers -- and yes, the officials.
Through four weeks of play, Wisconsin seems to be the Buckeyes most formidable opponent in the Leaders Division. Having Miller healthy will be crucial for the Badgers this week and a road trip to play Northwestern next Saturday in primetime.
