Wyoming linebacker Nehemie Kankolongo delivered a game-changing hit in the second quarter of the Cowboys' 56-23 win against Air Force on Saturday, forcing a fumble on the kickoff return to set up a quick touchdown and 14 points in just over three minutes of game time.
On Monday, the Mountain West ruled that Kankolongo's hit violated Rule 9-6-2, due to "targeting and initiating contact with the crown of the helmet."
Kankolongo dropped Air Force running back Anthony LaCoste while remaining upright, as his teammates recovered the loose ball. From the replay below, it is difficult to tell if Kankolongo initiated contact with this helmet. The MW league office reviewed more than we could dig up on YouTube, so it's better for us not to question the judgement on the call -- which drew no flag at all from the officials on site.
Kankolongo will miss Saturday's game against Texas State. LaCoste returned to the game following the fumble, even recorded a six-yard touchdown run in the loss.
