TCU defensive end Devonte Fields has been ruled out for Saturday's game against SMU , coach Gary Patterson told the Fort-Worth Star-Telegram.

Fields injured his foot during TCU's 20-10 loss at Texas Tech on Sept. 12. The Horned Frogs were off last week, and hope to bounce back with a victory against their former Southwest Conference rivals.

The 2012 Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year received a two-game suspension in May for breaking unspecified team rules. Fields missed all of the opener against LSU, but played sparingly against Southeast Louisiana and Texas Tech. According to Gary Patterson, Fields must sit one more quarter to complete his punishment.

Fields recorded 18.5 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks in 2012, but the suspension and injuries have hampered his sophomore campaign. TCU's defense has been solid in his absence, and there is no reason to risk further injury in a game where the Horned Frogs enter as double-digit favorites.
