Well, there's at least one Longhorns legend that Mack Brown does not have in his corner.

Former Texas running back, Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Hall-of-Famer Earl Campbell thinks it's time for Texas and Mack Brown to part ways.

"Nobody likes to get fired or leave a job, but things happen," Campbell told Fox 26 in Houston. "I'd go on record and say 'yes I think it's time.'

"I'd just say this, I take my hat off for USC for what they've done. They didn't mess around with it. They just said 'let's do it now.' I think at some point our university's people are going to have make a decision."

Though, if it makes Mack Brown feel any better, Campbell also said it's a hard decision to replace Brown, even if he already has a replacement in mind.

"Very hard because Coach Brown is a very good man," Campbell said. "I just hope he doesn't stay ... he's done some great things. The program, he brought it back, and we don't need it to get run down where somebody has to start all over again, maybe Jerry Gray."

Jerry Gray is a former Texas defensive back and he's currently the defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans.

Brown responded to Campbell's comments on Monday.

"Earl has done so much for Texas," said Brown. "He will always be welcomed at our school. I'm disappointed in his comments, but he's entitled to his opinion."

Now, there are plenty of Texas fans who likely share that opinion about Mack Brown, but to hear it publicly from a school legend like Earl Campbell certainly has to hurt. When you add Campbell's quote to the news that Texas regents contacted Nick Saban back in January -- somebody leaked that story on purpose -- it sure looks like the wheels are already in motion in Austin.

Mack Brown has pointed out that despite Texas' rough start to the season, the Longhorns can still win a Big 12 title. Every day it looks more and more like they'll have to.
