ESPN's David Pollack backtracks on female committee members

By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer

ESPN analyst David Pollack ruffled more than a few feathers in his response to Friday's news that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would serve on the College Football Playoff selection committee.

“I want people on this committee that can watch tape, yes, that have played football, that are around football, that can tell you different teams, on tape, not on paper ..." Pollack said on ESPN, before host Chris Fowler interrupted to ask if that meant women could not serve on the committee.

"You said that," Pollack responded before then agreeing, saying "I'll say it, yeah. Yeah."

Via The Big Lead, video of the exchange:

Pollack, an All-American player at Georgia, later clarified his stance on Twitter:

To be fair to Pollack, his opening comments strongly suggest that his objection with Rice legitimately doesn't stem from gender as much as her lack of connection to the game. But they nonetheless left him open to accusations that he didn't want a woman on the committee -- an opening Fowler seized on, and which an unsettled Pollack then made worse by agreeing.

Pollack doesn't deserve to be raked over the proverbial coals. But he should also be much, much more cautious in how he expresses his opinions next time.
