Everett Golson admits Notre Dame expulsion was over test cheating

Last May, in a statement declaring his intention to return to Notre Dame despite his recent explusion from the school, Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson said he had been dismissed for his "poor academic judgment." But neither Golson nor the school offered details any more specific than that.

That changed Tuesday when Sports Illustrated published a story and video of Golson's interview with Andy Staples, in which Golson admitted to having cheated on a test. Notre Dame officials expelled Golson for flagrantly violating the school's honor code, but told him he could reapply for admission for the spring 2014 semester.

"I had poor judgment on a test," Golson said in the video. "It wasn't due to poor grades or anything like that."

"Did you cheat on a test?" Staples asks.

"Yeah, something like that," Golson responds.

Golson reaffirmed to SI -- as he has since his explusion -- that he expects to be granted readmission to Notre Dame. Golson has spent his semester away from school working with quarterbacking guru George Whitfield.

As a redshirt freshman, Golson led the Irish to a surprise 12-0 regular season and berth in the BCS Championship Game before being dismissed in May of this year for what Notre Dame termed an "academic violation."

Golson's absence had opened the door for senior Tommy Rees, who has thrown for 1,944 yards and 20 touchdowns through eight games to help the Irish to a 6-2 record.
