An assistant coach at Division II Missouri Southern State was killed in a shooting Friday night, the Associated Press reported.

Police said that 37-year-old Derek Moore, the Lions' offensive line coach, was shot as he left a Joplin, Mo. movie theater. He died later at an area hospital.

Police told the AP that a 39-year-old suspect was taken into custody after the shooting and is currently being held in the Joplin City Jail.

A Joplin native, Moore joined the MSSU staff after three seasons at FCS Western Illinois. He is survived by a seven-year-old son.

MSSU was scheduled to play Lindenwood Saturday for the school's Homecoming. The game has been postponed and all Homecoming events canceled.

"Derek was new to Missouri Southern but he was embraced by our campus and community," Lions head coach Daryl Daye said in a statement. "He was a very likeable person who always had a smile on his face and made friends easily with our staff and players. This is an unspeakable loss for the MSSU athletics family."

"We are stunned and deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our prayers are with Derek's family," MSSU interim president Alan Marble said. "We are ensuring that our employees and students have the emotional support they need during this difficult time."
