Are Gators in danger of first losing season since 1979?

By Eye on College Football staff

The year was 1979.

The snowboard was invented. The Bee Gees were riding high on the strength of their multi-platinum Spirits Having Flown LP. Twenty-eight year-old Nick Saban was serving as a defensive assistant at West Virginia, and during his spare time was presumably doing a lot of snowboarding and listening to the Bee Gees.

Also in 1979, the Florida Gators went 0-10-1 under head coach Charley Pell (read more about that horror show HERE). They haven't had a losing season since. Only Florida State, which last finished below .500 in 1976, has a longer current streak without a losing season.

We bring this up because there's a real possibility UF's streak could end this season.

The Gators are 4-4 after Saturday's loss to Georgia, with four to play. In two of its remaining games (Vanderbilt this week, Georgia Southern on Nov. 23), Florida will be favored. In the other two (at South Carolina on Nov. 16, against FSU in Gainesville on Nov. 30), barring anything unforeseen, the Gators will not be favored.

So the good money has UF finishing 6-6, followed by a bowl date with team TBD, where anything -- actually two things, a win or a loss -- could happen. (Our Jerry Palm has the Gators playing Cincinnati in the BBVA Compass Bowl.) Lose there, and the Gators are 6-7.

We at Eye on College Football predict Florida fans would not taking kindly to that. Although those who were around in '79 will probably tell you it's not as bad as a homecoming loss to Tulsa.
